Information
At least 1 in 10 pregnant and postpartum women suffer from depression and/or anxiety. The changes in hormones during pregnancy and postpartum can impact the chemical balances in the brain, increasing the likelihood of these conditions. Also, many associated life transitions can contribute to emotional changes:
• Related Health Issues
• Changes to Partner Relationships
• Associated Insomnia/Tiredness
• Hormonal Effects on Memory
• Involvement of Family of Origin
• Stress of Parenthood/Pre-Parenthood
• New Financial Elements
• and Many Others...
Knowing the warning signs, and getting support can help reduce the likelihood and severity of anxiety and/or depression.
Symptoms of Depression:
• Loss of Interest in activities
• Regularly feeling sad or "empty"
• Concentration difficulties
• Excessive irritability or crying
• Changes to appetite or sleep
• Pervasive or extreme fatigue
• Feeling worthless or hopeless
Expecting and new mothers often mistake these symptoms for mood swings. Untreated, these conditions can increase the chance of preterm labor, as well as newborn irritability and sleep difficulties.
Symptoms of Anxiety:
• Plagued by irrational fears
• Regularly feeling tense/worried
• Concentration difficulties
• Panic attacks; unexpected onset of symptoms may include racing heart, lightheadedness, sweaty palms, and/or breathlessness.
